Historic and International Geneva
For over 100 years, Switzerland has been home to many international organizations. With its 22 international organizations, 250 NGOs and 169 permanent missions, Geneva can be considered the capital of multilateral diplomacy. For the role it plays as host city for international organizations it has been dubbed International Geneva, and indeed, together with New York, Geneva is the largest center of negotiation and international cooperation in the world.
Although it is a relatively small city by European, Asian or American standards, Geneva has cultural programs and an infrastructure that any great metropolis would be proud of. The city is ideally situated at the tip of a lake that bears its name, is close to world-famous ski resorts in the Alps, and is culturally linked with the Mediterranean region as well as central Europe.
Geneva is home to over 40 museums and more than 300 cultural sites and attractions. From the historic Reformation Wall, to the unique Jet d'Eau (Geneva's symbol), not forgetting the old town and its hidden gems, the arts district, the flower clock, the special atmosphere of Carouge, the Palais des Nations, the watchmaking sites and shops and many other unforgettable spots, Geneva certainly knows how to satisfy all appetites!
Cuisine and music from all over the world meet in this vibrant city. Nature lovers will enjoy the 310 hectares of parks and 40'000 trees in public areas or along the lakeshore. Culture lovers can benefit from a large scale of events, from operas to movie festivals, including concerts and theatre plays. The University of Geneva takes an active part in the cultural life of the city, with the University film society and the University choir.
