Challenges facing Humanitarian Action
Peter Maurer, President, International Committee of the Red Cross
& Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs
This Inaugural Conference of the Geneva Summer Schools 2013 is organised in the framework of the 150th anniversary of the ICRC, on the occasion of the commemoration of the Battle of Solferino (24 June 1859), that led Henry Dunant to write his book: A Memory of Solferino. Horrified by the suffering of wounded soldiers left on the battlefield, Dunant set about a movement that led to the adoption of the Geneva Conventions and the creation of the International Red Cross.
Panel-Discussion with Peter Maurer (President, ICRC), Ambassador Manuel Bessler (Delegate for Humanitarian Aid and Head SHA, FDFA). Moderated by Professor Doris Schopper, Director of the Centre for Education and Research in Humanitarian Action (CERAH).
